As a rule for horse under 3 year of age, expect:

Month One for saddle horse 1-4 weeks gentling or ground work Unless they were the trainers barn yard pets.

Month Two Learning to be brave with a rider & listen to all types of commands Same Building up strength to be a saddle horse

Month Three Learning to be brave in the outside world Continuing to develop muscling and understanding, expericence If all is going great, nearing a well trained  green broke saddle horse. To be a harness horse, they must be able to understand & have a :

Solid Stop,  Quiet Go,  Good Left & Right;  gently & quietly giving into rein requests,  without leg aides. Follow his head with his shoulders. Must be calm,  able to listen to voice reasurrance & gentle rein guide , verses body contact.   Not bolting to avoid work or fears.  Not backing to avoid pressure or work.

AT THIS POINT, THEN 30 DAYS IN HARNESS WILL PRODUCE A WORKING HORSE, not bomb proof. Not a horse which should be used for heavy pulling, or they will develop bad habits, or flat refuse to work.

GUIDING WITH REINS: use only the rotation of your one wrist to drive your horse.  VERSES  pulling their heads off.

In advanced drivng, a horse must listen to voice & a TICKLE of whip to move a certain part of the horse's body to a lift or drop of that section. I don't teach body guide with a whip.

A WHIP IS NOT A "GET GOING" Clubing DEVICE!

WHIP CRACKING AND WHIP AIDES FOR A HORSE ARE TWO DIFFERENT SPORTS - or - CONCEPTS.

Note that a horse can pull his own weight when in proper vechile without strenious terrain or speed requirements, or continious work most of the day providing he is built up to that level & a minium of 6 yrs old.

With more speed, weight, less breaks: you'll need a bigger horse or more horses used in shorter periods.

In the old days,  horses where started at two years with ground work and in a cart & or lite buggy As they aged, and gained experience, the type of work they where put to became more strenous & or heavy. They were not ridden until 4 & 5 yrs -  light ridding by children or in basic training.  6 yrs. and up, riding & driving horses.  Riding horses were not considered finished until they could complete a dressage/finished high school test. A horse was often 12 yrs old by this time. Draft horses are mature between 8 & 12 yrs old, at which time they could be worked hard and heavy.  Much, much heavier then they are usually used today.

At age 6 to 8 years all anatomy of most horses have reached maturity.  The bigger the horse & the hotter the breed, the more time required (past 6 years old). Race horses & draft horses around 8 to 12 yrs can be expected.  Gender-wise, stallions need a extra six months to a year, verses mares of the same breed.

The Spaniards, did not consider a horse ready for full real use until they reached the age of 12 years.   They also did not consider a horse trained unless it had reached the level of HIGH SCHOOL.  I concur.

Oh, by the way, raising the age mimium of race horses would do away with most of the physical break downs & other troubles of the poor beasts.  Ending  the hub bub of humane or not human fights, etc. etc. Race horses in pre 1930's ereas started their racing careers at a more mature age.  History records a few of them.  Which also noted, they maintained their track careers to ages 9-13 yrs of age.

DO NOT EXPECT AN UNBROKE HORSE TO BE A WORKING DRIVING HORSE IN 30 DAYS.
